Meknes
Meknes (Meknès) is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, located in the north-central region, about 60 km west of Fes. Founded in the 11th century as a military outpost, it reached its peak under Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672–1727), who made it the capital and built grand palaces, massive walls, and monumental gates like the famous Bab Mansour—earning it the nickname “Versailles of Morocco.” Its UNESCO-listed historic medina and imperial sites blend Islamic and European influences, with nearby Roman ruins at Volubilis adding extra historical depth
